Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story tan stucco house with a red tile roof stands behind snow-dusted shrubs and a gravel yard under a pale sky with falling snow.

A contractor quoting a water heater replacement here works out venting and combustion air requirements before anything else, because those decisions follow the fuel the home burns. Utility gas heats more occupied homes in San Miguel County, New Mexico than any other fuel, at 31.1% (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Gas-fired water heaters draw combustion air from the space around them and exhaust through a flue, and both of those pathways have to be sized and routed correctly for the new unit to run safely. A water heater that is installed without checking the existing flue for diameter, condition, and draft can backdraft, which pushes combustion gases into the living space. Getting the appliance right is only part of the job.

Older wiring is what stops a straightforward water heater swap from staying straightforward. Half the homes in San Miguel County, New Mexico were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built to that era's electrical standards carries service sized for the loads of that era, and a modern water heater, particularly a heat pump unit, draws more than that service was planned for. A contractor quoting the job will open the panel before pricing the equipment, because the panel is where the real scope lives.

What Gets Installed With a New Water Heater

The tank is the piece a homeowner sees first. It sits in a utility closet, basement, or garage and holds a supply of water that a contractor heats to a set temperature. Attached to the top of the tank are the inlet and outlet pipes, which carry cold water in and hot water out to every fixture in the house.

The pressure relief valve mounts on the side of the tank and opens automatically if pressure inside climbs too high. A contractor also installs the anode rod inside the tank to slow corrosion, and connects the unit to its fuel source, whether that is a gas line with a shutoff valve or a dedicated electrical connection.

The drawing shows a typical water heater layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to this particular home.
