Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A gray metal electrical panel box mounted on a pale concrete block wall with conduit pipes running above and below it, and a coiled dark cable hanging on the wall to its right.

Ductwork and supply lines in these houses were laid in for systems that are long gone, and what replaced those systems did not always get the infrastructure rebuilt around it. Half the homes in Mora County, New Mexico were built in 1983 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That history shows up when a contractor pulls access and finds plumbing routed for a different configuration than what the homeowner wants to put in now. The new water heater goes in after those conditions are accounted for, not before.

What Gets Installed With a New Water Heater

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing interior rooms with furniture, a cylindrical water heater with connected pipes, and a flue rising through the dark shingled roof.

The storage tank is the piece a homeowner sees first, sitting in a utility closet, basement, or garage. It holds and heats a supply of water, kept ready until a tap opens somewhere in the house. A gas unit has a burner assembly at its base; an electric unit carries heating elements inside the tank wall.

A pressure relief valve mounts on the side of the tank and opens automatically if pressure or temperature climbs beyond a safe point. The dip tube runs down through the top of the tank to deliver cold incoming water to the bottom, while a separate outlet pipe at the top carries hot water out to the rest of the house.

The drawing shows a general layout of these parts, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your home's configuration.
